What usability methods do you use?

What usability methods do you use?

  • GOMS?
  • Informative Walkthrough?
  • Thinking out loud protocol?

Others? (apart from the "ask your mom" tips, which are well documented elsewhere on SO)

GOMS is too heavy (and too far from reality) for most tasks ... I would suggest something lighter, such as usability in the hallway, as Joel Spolsky recommended:

  • Dogfooding. Using our own application, we quickly discover which parts are awkward or inconvenient to use.

  • Log and analyze support calls and keep track of which parts of the application's users can use or find.

  • Usability tests. We record the task as close to the actual use case as possible and ask multiple users to complete it. We watch them do it, ask them to think out loud while they do it, and then ask them many questions.

build a user interface from pieces of paper. create multiple task scenarios - it might not be worth covering the entire user interface in one go. finding good test subjects based on your target audience (this might be the hardest part). provide the subjects mentioned with a printed agenda .. give the person the opportunity to act as a "reference system" but otherwise remain calm .. ask subjects to "think" - tell what their brain is doing (why good items are hard to find) .. video of what happens and parses ... fix and iteration.
