Sending messages MS Reporting Services 2005 Reports as if from a specific address

We have various reporting services reports that plan to automatically generate reports and email them to the mailing list. This works pretty well, but they seem to come from MSRepSvc@ourdomain.com

.

That's all well and good, but PHB would like them to look like they're coming from OurGroup@ourdomain.com

. We have a group set up, so Exchange allows us (the ones in OurGroup

) to send messages from Outlook using the OurGroup

From address, but I'm struggling to find how to configure Reporting Services to do this.

Is this a server config option? Is this a user access profile parameter? Can we do this programmatically by connecting to the RS Server using an application (many of the reports are run by code already).

Change: . We share the server with other groups - so it must be for a subset or separately. (It's RS'05, if it matters, even though we're on track to upgrade to '08.)

Sorry you can't.

Since it uses SMTP, you are limited by the protocol. The settings are defined in . Config files and are not configurable at runtime or in the app or in the report / subscription.

Outlook uses MAPI, which allows you to specify "From".

There are ugly workarounds now :-)

  • If you are sending reports to a mailbox, you can use rules to forward and modify email. However, the mailbox must be associated with a login where you can log in and configure the rules. Otherwsie, you will need Outlook to apply the rules if you are just connecting to a mailbox.

  • Install RS several times and set "From" differently for each installation. In this case, "FROM" is defined in the configuration files.

  • Send email to a service that tracks the mailbox for your forwarded

Option 3 is obviously the tidiest but has the largest investment.

You can configure the sender's email address by using the Reporting Services Configuration Manager (available from Configuration under the SQL Server 2005 Start menu). In the left pane, click the E-mail Settings heading and enter the sender's address.

This is the address that will appear in all reports generated on the server you are configuring. I don't believe there is a way to specify sender addresses at the report level.

Are you using a data driven subscription or just the RS subscription type to distribute your report?

I believe that with a data driven subscription, you can provide a custom table with information that can be used by the subscription engine to specify properties for the subscription, including parameters for the report, recipient list, format type, etc. It allows you to specify TO / FROM / SUBJECT, etc. For email communication based on data found in your custom spreadsheet. Check it out and let us know if it works for you.

greetings.
