SEO URL Formatting Tips?

I'm looking for tips on url coding for an SEO compliant site.

I have a list of variables that I need!

hypen = used to separate places, Leeds-UK-England
space = underline where spaces occur
hypen = plus sign used in some UK places (stafford-on-avon)
forward slash = exclamation used in house to name things.

Are those chosen badly or well? Are there any better ones, I'm sure I need all the data to decode the URL correctly.

My SEO gave me a list of things that are bad but not good. I've searched for them and Google seems to give the same results.

Cheers, Sarkie

Google did not recognize underscores as word separators - see article from 2005 . This stepped into the wisdom gained, and most "experts" and articles you find in SEO will still recommend it.

However , this changed in the past year : underscores are now recognized as word separators, so it opens up avenues for URL design. This now allows dashes to be used as dashes and underscores as spaces, which some may find more natural. I haven't found many people who have caught up with this, including the SEO consultants I deal with professionally.

As far as a good system for your use case, I would recommend asking some non-technical people (colleagues, friends, relatives, etc.) to see what they like.

Hyphens for spaces are the usual and preferred method.
