SQL Reporting Services Express: Data Source for External Server

Using SSRS 2008 Express Edition, is it possible to create a data source that connects to an external SQL server, or is it artificially limited to the same SQL Server and an instance of that Reporting Services engine?

I understood myself. You cannot define an external data source.

You can try using a linked server where you just call procedures on the remote (linked) data source.
