Vertical and horizontal tables

Can anyone tell me what the performance gains are when using a vertical table for lookups? Which is faster, a vertical or horizontal table?

From the vertical table, do you mean the EAV model ? If so, it is usually slower to search than a regular "horizontal" table. Its usual rationale is not performance, but flexibility at the expense of performance and possibly data integrity.
