Top news and modules of the DotNetNuke forum?

I need to either recommend an existing one or develop a dedicated news and forum module for installing DotNetNuke. Both modules should have the functionality you expect from such a module. Quite an open set of requirements, but that's all I have so far.

I was brought in to rescue an Intranet redevelopment project that DNN already uses, so it is non-negotiable.

I've never developed a DNN before, so I don't know how easy it is to develop modules.

For those with experience in the area, please tell me:

  • The best news and forum modules you know about
  • How to easily set up a custom module
  • Would you recommend developing custom modules or using existing products.

Version 3 of DNN is currently in use, but a newer version can be installed if required.

The "news module" is fairly open- ended , but the best simple news module is probably the Ventrian News Articles . My company, Engage Software, is building another article management system, Engage: Publish , which is more comprehensive in some areas.

Active forums are generally considered the cream of the DNN forums.

Developing a DNN module takes a little getting used to, so you're familiar with your options and what DNN has to offer, but it's pretty straightforward once you know what you're doing. Bring on multiple training options if you choose to take this route.

I think your best bet is to evaluate the existing modules, take them for your back, and see if you can get them to meet your needs before creating something yourself. All of the modules I mentioned will be able to support you if you run into any problems or need help figuring out if they have a way to meet your needs.

Peter, please list your clients' requirements. You may not need a news module.

As far as forums go, ActiveForum is good. The free DNN Forum module that comes with DNN is good too.
