MSSQLServer 2008 in Virtual PC

What are your experiences with running SQL Server in a virtual machine? We currently have an instance of sql2008 running in a virtual machine. Both processors crashed into the roof at the time of the request.

What are your impressions and what do you suggest in this matter?

I was having severe performance issues using virtual SQL servers for heavy database applications (ETL development). See fooobar.com/questions/161686 / ... for troubleshooting my experience and search results in core issues.

Essentially a heavy DB process like ETL will outperform I / O (more sequential operations, so it doesn't wait for the disk to search as much as an OLTP application) and Translation Lookaside Buffer (large datasets), both of which are very slow on a naively virtualized image. The posting links to this document on the AMD site (written by the vendor, so take it with a grain of salt) which (in between extolling the merits of AMD's new Opteron chips) talks a little about the underlying issues.

Are you using VMWare? If applicable with the service pack back in September and since then.

Otherwise, you can limit the resources that 2008 uses if you don't have machine limits.
