How to disable automatic boxing ms of quoted column alias queries in excel 2007?

I am working on a worksheet that accesses a legacy data source via MS Query. I'm trying to list some of the ridiculously ugly column names, but the data source doesn't support wrapping around aliases with quoted names. Because excel automatically wraps the aliases in quotes, query / errors fail. I seem to be stuck.

How do I stop this default behavior?

I would rather not use VBA for this case. I'm just trying to figure out if I can get MS Query to pseudonize these columns without wrapping them in single quotes.

I found several articles about registry entry / hot fixes. But they all refer to earlier versions of excel and reg records do not exist for 07.

I found a job.

If I edit the SQL directly from the Connection Properties tab -> Definition (AND not from within MS Query), then aliases are not automatically wrapped in the query result.

A small box to work with, but no copy will solve :)
