Installing RS2008 on SQL Server 2000

Is it possible to install Reporting Services 2008 against an instance of SQL Server 2000? The docs clearly state that only SQL Server 2005 or 2008 is supported, but I thought I should ask anyway for ways to get around this limitation.

I should mention that I am not talking about the data source for my reports (which is a remote data source, which can be any type of SQL server). I am interested in the databases where the report server stores its stuff.

No, the report server and reportservertempdb are REQUIRE 2005 or 2008. You can submit raw data for your reports from instance 2000, but reporting services databases must be 2005 or 2008.

see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157285.aspx and read the section on database server version requirements

I have no idea if this will work, however Reporting Services also depends on the SQL Server Agent service (for subscription) as well as relational databases, so both should be compatible. If you have Reporting Services 2008 then you (or your organization) must have some kind of SQL Server 2008 license so I don't understand why you would want to do this as you can install the SQL 2008 database engine to support your server reports (on the same server, otherwise you will need an additional license).

Keep in mind that as of April 2008, SQL Server 2000 is no longer in Microsoft mainstream support, so you should avoid introducing new infrastructure or functionality using this version whenever possible. The configuration described above, even if you get it working, will not be supported by Microsoft and possibly all ISVs and partners.
