Drupal VS Zikula

Im new to drupal (just finished my first website with it), I found it very easy and powerful to use.

I was recently asked to create a community with Zikula.

They prefer to use zikula because it is an "evolution" of phpnuke, which is the cms they are currently using (I "reinstall and rebuild" it).

Also, I want to learn and only use 1 cms.

So what are the main differences between drupal and zikula? What are the advantages and disadvantages of one and the other?

Why should I choose Drupal or Zikula?

ps: I know that in most cases the answer is "all about your needs", but it should be a general question

From google trend Blue is drupal, yellow is phpnuke and red is zikula.

drupal phpnuke zikula http://google.com/trends/viz?q=drupal,+Zikula,+phpnuke&date=all&geo=all&graph=weekly_img&sort=0&sa=N

You would like to know something with the future. They wish they could find support. I would say that this is not yet Zikulas hour.

I've never heard of Zikulas; I've been working with Drupal for several months - and have heard a lot about Drupal over the past year and a half.

If I had to choose one CMS, I would go with a solution that:

  • most support
  • is the most used
  • has a good reputation - or at least not a very bad one.

Between Zikulas and Drupal, the choice is clear: Drupal is the one I would study, not Zikulas.

I have been working with Zikula and in the past with postnuke (not phpnuke!). I like the multilingual system and privacy.

Zikula is ok, but I would say hands down Drupal.

Here are reviews of both of them here: CMS Critic Reviews

There are still some caveats in Drupal and you will have to do things manually if you want a completely cohesive system, but at the end of the day (and the learning curve), you will end up with something pretty solid for not too long.

I have used Zikula for years, back when it was PostNuke. The system switched to using Symfony, Doctrine, twig, bootstrap and all kinds of other advanced technologies. Yes, the community is small, but I really feel like it is about to break out. Over the years I have evaluated other technologies, including Drupal and Joomla, but they just never seemed to fit what I was trying to do. (This is somewhat due to my acquaintance with Zikula, I'm sure.)

I cannot give you any comparisons because I have not used them extensively and anything I would say would be unfair to Drupal. I will say that there are a few more modules for Drupal.

Since your client wants to use zikula, I also suggest that you do what they ask. If I hired you, and you fought with me, I use, I would probably start looking for someone else.

Everything you learn will be useful in many other cases.

Good luck in your endeavors

I wonder why no one mentions the amount of server resources required to run Drupal. This is great, but if you are planning on launching a community site that gets bigger someday, then I would prefer that you not try Drupal.

Now I am using Zikula and it is not bad.
