Creating links between posts in WordPress

Is there a way to create an implicit relationship between two posts in WordPress without any categories these posts might be in?

The idea is that in the post template, it will get and list related posts for the current post.

I'm guessing you can achieve this by using tags to group messages together, but this seems to be a salutation to the tagging system for a purpose it was not designed for.

Any ideas?

Will add post IDs as metadata? I wrote a quick hack to display the Digg window for posts that were submitted to Digg. I was manually adding a meta box digg_url

with a Digg url. Perhaps you could add some fields related__post

and add code to iterate through everything and render the links? Are you looking for a more automated solution?

Maybe I didn't get it, but aren't categories just for this purpose?

I may have missed the question. But tags, archives, and categories are meant to "connect" messages based on this common connection.

Other than that, I can only see ...

Related posts if they are highly customizable and allow the blog to automatically suggest "related posts" and "SEO links" links (in the post) words or phrases to relevant posts.

All the best
