Collecting visualization data for training

I'm just starting to get interested in visualization and I would like to know where I can get some data, preferably in the real world, to see what queries and graphs I can extract from it. Its a more personal exercise for creating pretty pretty representations of this data.

After looking at this, I wondered where the data came from and what else can be done from Wikipedia. Is there anyway I can get data like wikipedia?

Also, can you recommend any good books? I don't trust user reviews on the Amazon website :-)

You can download the raw Wikipedia data from http://download.wikimedia.org . There are many different views on the data available. English Wikipedia is by far the largest database and there is no current full dump, but it continues. It will probably take several months to complete and be available for download.

The most recent one was compressed at 18 GB, which is not compressed to 2.5 TB.

Fantastic book Visual display of quantitative information by Edward Tuft.
