How to Schedule a Deferred Custom Action from an Immediate Custom Action in Wix / DTF?

I have seen claims that it is possible, even normal, to reference an immediate custom action from a .wxs file and assign subsequent (deferred) custom actions to that custom action. I don't know what the code that does this looks like. Anyone?
