Where can I find good examples or templates for configuration management plans?

Documentation is not a developer's favorite area, but an important area to follow if you want to have standards in your organization. We are trying to put together a new Configuratio Mgmt configuration plan to set up changes, backup strategies, and other interesting things like development process, go to production.

I would like to get your opinion on good examples or maybe a good start to the CMP process.

If you need any list of items in the software configuration factory, these links provide an example: http://www.scmwise.com/software-configuration-management-plan.html

However, please note that the content of an SCM plan is highly dependent on your company's standard and process during the actual software development.

I usually call cmcrossroads.com for this kind of information. The site is not well organized, but it has a lot of information. Another very useful resource is nasa.gov (I know).

Instead of listing the CM plan index, I would recommend you check this link: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ivv/pdf/170879main_T2401.pdf p>

Some quick pointers to customize the CM process:

  • You absolutely need management / corporate support. Without their push, no one will stick with the process.
  • SCM is like the police / postal service. Nobody remembers them until something works out. In your case, this is a good sign if no one talks (complains) about your implemented SCM process.
  • SCM open source systems are on par with another type. Depending on the intensity of your project, you may need multiple POCs to determine which system suits your needs.

This is a broad topic; I would recommend Alexis Leon's book if you get stuck.

Software development associated with all documents is available as part of the Rational Unified Process [RUP]. They can be found at:
