The first time a website connection is negotiated, there is a performance hit. This is due to the handshake that SSL does, sending information back and forth. Try sniffing your browser (HTTP Live Headers) when you make an SSL connection to see how much goes behind the scenes.
There is also a request to create a server to create an SSL connection (it is CPU intensive, like all crypto key operations).

Let me turn it around and ask why you won't be using http on your public website? If all the information is publicly available, and there is no reason someone would like it not to be publicly known that they are clicking on your site, then there is no reason to be concerned about https.
