Overuse of Adobe Flash

Many websites in the wild seem to abuse their visitors by automatically launching flash based ads / trailers and the like. What are modern browsers protection, for example,

  • Prevent autoplay for a specific URL / site / domain
  • Disallow use of speakers [flash does not allow this setting, and I am especially annoyed by the abuse of speakers]?

Of course, removing flash is not an option at all :)

Ideas?

Update: Clarification: I visit the sites in question because they have useful content ... but I don't care for them to force my speaker ... Bandwidth victim I can live with ... IE there is an option "Play sounds on webpages" but not on a page / site. I really need flash memory (for watching podcasts, etc.).

There are several ways:

  • Stop Autoplay , a Firefox add-on that makes it obvious;
  • Flashblock , a similar deal;
  • FlashMute to manage Flash audio (I find sites that automatically play Flash audio to be most annoying and almost always close right away); and
  • Remove Flash. My laptop is not installed and you will be surprised how much you will not miss it.

I usually start by using the Hosts file to block many unwanted sites.

In terms of browser implementation: Internet Explorer offers the ability to block things by customizing zones and adding sites to them. (Which is actually the same as using the hosts file)

Current browsers also help you prevent malicious websites by using the lists they periodically download from the internet that use alerts so you don't accidentally visit them.

Apart from these things, there are many addons available for blocking images, javascript, flash, etc. You can find some of them in other answers.

I don't think any existing browsers offer features like this - what happens inside the plugin is mostly outside the scope of the browser. I think currently what ultimately curbs this behavior is social - I only saw an autoplay audio banner ad once, and a day or two later on the same site, there was a message from an admin apologizing and explaining that he changed the banner suppliers.

With that said, the widespread "mute plugins" feature in the browser would be a good idea; I just don't think there is now. I also want Flash to set the "mute" option in the context menu, but again, this is not the case.

First with IE, don't install flash install. To stop prompts to install it, add this to the registry

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

Then, for the odd site that you have to use flash for, use an alternative browser like Opera or Chrome for which the flash drive will be installed.
