What program can I use to assist clients remotely?

I have a lot of people asking me to fix their computers. This is usually "slow computer" or "my computer has pop-up windows" etc. In other words, they have viruses and spyware. I thought I could use a remote program to do this, instead of bringing their computer to me or me while traveling to their home.

I thought about UltraVNC, although I'm not sure how to get them to use it. I would like to have a program that they can download from my site.

What program would you recommend for this? Remote Desktop? VNC? Something other? I'm happy to pay a small fee if necessary to make things as much as possible. Word of mouth is helpful and a good referral for simple computer work (me) is worth paying monthly or one-time.

I have Vista, most will have Vista Home Premium or XP Home. I have Vista Home Premium and Mac OS X. I can use Linux if needed. I just haven't installed it right now.

Thank.

EDIT: Is there an alternative to background stuff? I like it, but I'm afraid to put everything on one provider.

LogMeIn has a free version that works really well. It runs in the user's system tray and you can log in and control your computer as long as they have the program. The free version has a few lesser options, but these are mostly luxury items rather than essentials.

https://www.copilot.com/

It was simple, so even the most novice computer users can figure it out.

Copilot helps you fix computer problems by allowing you to connect to their computer, see what they see, and control their mouse and keyboard to help fix the problem.

This is good because they just go to the site and enter the code you give them. Installation is easy from there.

Team Viewer is a desktop remote control support tool. It's free for non-commercial, personal use.

There are several different options:

  • Remote Desktop: Great interface, integrates very well with Windows (I had no problem connecting to Vista desktop from my XP laptop). I think your client will need Windows XP pro; XP does not have a Remote Desktop Server at home.
  • RealVNC: great interface, free version is very useful. Encrypted connections are available with the non-free version.
  • There are others (like Copilot), but I only used Remote Desktop and RealVNC.

With either of these, you need to make sure that port forwarding is configured if they have a router and firewall is whitelisted.

Windows XP has a built-in "Windows Assist" that allows you to send invitations to another Windows machine (usually via email) and allows you to remotely control the machine while viewing them. This is a good option as it is already built into Windows (although not as well known as RemoteDesktop or LogMeIn).

The advantage over Remote Desktop is that the user can see what you are doing with your machine and control can be passed back and forth.

This link contains steps to do this.
