Windows Installer 4.5 and Sql Server 2005?

I uninstalled SQL server 2005

a while ago when I installed SQL server 2008

express.

Performing this installation requires Windows 4.5 to be installed.

Now I have found a reason to SQL server 2005

express again .

(to reconnect to Outlook Business Contact Manager which forces it to connect to the default MSSQL \ MSSMLBIZ database)

However, when I install any version SQL server 2005

, it fails for all important things, like the database engine, with the message that I must update Windows Installer to a newer version.

I am interpreting this as the installer SQL 2005

is crashing and believes that it is because the version of the installer is incorrect and the version is assumed to be too old.

But I suspect the version is too consistent.

Anyway from this?

The error messages generated by MSI-based installers are generally misleading (most installers silently gobbled up a lot of errors and presented one generic error message). The best you could do is sift through the log files generated by the SQL Server 2005 Installer (IIRC, they are dumped into the% TMP% directory.) This will certainly provide more information.

You can try to uninstall the KB942288 package ("Add or Remove Programs", make sure the "Show Updates" checkbox is checked and look for the corresponding entry.) Here is the corresponding Microsoft KB article . No guarantees as to what this will do to your system, however, especially since you have certainly followed a lot of installation steps since installing 4.5.

You can also try one or more of the common MSI debugging methods described in KB 555175 .
