Is this the correct version of Vim for OS X Snow Leopard?

I would like to try Vim. I am using Mac OS 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard). I downloaded vim7.0.224.tar.bz2 from here .

However, I have doubts. This is a new version, but the title says "OS X 10.4 (Tiger)".

Is there another, preferred version that I should be aware of?

You should definitely check out MacVim . It is a port of Vim for Mac, written in Cocoa (like Safari, Mail and many other Mac applications). Regarding compatibility with Snow Leopard, the developer says:

Stable builds seem to work fine on Snow Leopard, but please consider using snapshot as they are specifically built for Snow Leopard (snapshot also works on Leopard).

I believe the Vim package for mac is dead. Try this one .

This is not the newest version. I'm not sure what the deal is with this site, but it seems to be out of date. MacVim currently lives on Google Code and I am successfully running 7.2 stable 1.2 on Snow Leopard.

Both MacVim

(last shot from Google Code

) and traditional curses vim

can be easily installed and saved using MacPorts .

You will see vim is enabled by default on Mac OS X. Just open Terminal.app and type "vim" in the command line. You will not need to download and install vim on a computer running OS X.

Please note that macvim is a gui application and not very helpful in how it works. also the macports vim version skips every useful feature
