What is Microsoft's impact on open source using MVC?

I listened to the 11/24 Hansel Minutes podcast talking about Moonlight.

To paraphrase, Scott commented that Microsoft's attitude towards open source is changing rapidly, especially with the adoption of the MVC architecture.

I admit I don't have a better "big picture" of what MVC means to the developing world, but in particular I want to know how it benefits the open source communities?

In fact, MVC itself doesn't seem to have anything to do with open source except that Ruby on Rails is inspired by it, something that open source developers use, and the like. The key to MVC and Microsoft's open source strategy is that ASP.NET MVC, which is likely to become important to Microsoft, is released as open source software and developed in the community.

Anyone who releases any code as open source is doing something for the benefit of the open source community.

Think of the open source community as a giant wiki - the more information and ideas, the better the wiki. You benefit from stackoverflow by being here and contributing, because any positive input adds to the greater good.

So Microsoft's contribution (though worth it) benefits the open source community because they say, "This is how we decided to implement the MVC framework, please feel free to watch."

Who knows who can benefit from this? Maybe many, maybe not. This is the beauty of the thing.
