Standard / common markup language for user-supplied content?

I guess it might be similar to this question , but I'm wondering if there is a standard / popular markup language for wiki and similar user-provided style content. With the proliferation of various markup syntaxes out there, it seems like one of them would be a deacton to implement. There seems to be at least one group that wanted to create a standard (and an RFC for it), but they seem to have broken down around mid-2005.

Does anyone know what is the standard / most popular? If not, what is easier for users, but has good flexibility for advanced users?

Markdown is popular in some circles. In addition to the original Perl version, there is a C version called Discount and several other implementations, including one in Lua .

There's a list of lightweight markup languages here .

There is no standard that I know of.

I would say the most popular (well, in projects I usually stick with at least) seems to be trending towards Markdown and Textile these days.

This is often a matter of preference. My preference is for Markdown, but there wouldn't be much to argue about whether someone prefers a different markdown.
