Search for open source CMS with excellent internationalization and localization

Can anyone suggest a CMS capable of offering the following features:

  • Free / open source
  • Multiple language support (both frontend and backend)
  • Content translation support (i.e. an article can have 1 + translation)
  • Support for different types of content, namely pages, articles (timestamped, with comments) and images (galleries).
  • Basic categorization support (section level sufficient)
  • Support for media control (localizable image galleries)
  • User friendly
  • light and fast
  • PHP or Ruby
  • mature enough

Personally, I can only think of Drupal 6, but this is quite an overkill for what I want to do and the localization doesn't work 100%. I can basically live with anything built from the ground up with localization in mind.

After several days of browsing and testing various demo sites, SPIP seems to be the only correct solution to my problem. Any other idea?

Daisy was built from the ground up with localization .

In Daisy, each document can have one or more language variants, and Daisy keeps track of the synchronization of the original document and the translated version. This simplifies change management.

For example, I might ask Daisy "Give me a list of documents for which either the Japanese translation does not exist or is no longer synchronized with the original." You can do this for any type of file, including screenshots.

I think it meets all your requirements except that it is built on the Java stack.

How about Joomla

? I'm not sure if it meets all of your requirements, but it's a suggestion nonetheless.

Probably a sub-kill, but WordPress with the qTranslate plugin works well for the i18n admin interface and the main content block of your page.
