Are there any benefits when upgrading from SQL2000 to SQL2005?
We found yes.
The query optimizer is being updated and improved. We found that many of the query plans were different with no other changes.
Even our end users commented on the speed improvements and overall responsiveness. I have a letter to prove it: -D
At the same time, we overwrote very few stored procedures because they were worse. However, the same settings also improved responsiveness on SQL 2000 and were just bad code / ideas.

I still haven't found much on this, but here is a ton of marketing material that essentially says SQL2005 is a good thing:

and in this white paper Why Upgrade to SQLSERVER2005 (. doc)
he points
Faster response times for end users
Database query response times have improved 70-80 percent for many applications converted from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. Quicker query response times business users are more responsive and the database will be used to make real-time decisions. Queries that previously took several hours to complete can now be completed in minutes. This provides a whole new level of functionality for end users because analysis can be performed on ad and not exclusively in predefined reports. Companies can use this new information availability to dynamically monitor processes.

On the other hand, there seems to be a bit of an upgrade issue when updating.
Why does upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 result in slower queries?
