Software translation cost

I was wondering if anyone could give me approximate figures for translating resx files. Let's say I have 10 Resx files with each of 10K words. What will be the cost of a translation from English to Spanish (or from English to German)?

For details, we use Infragistics controls in our application. IG does not provide its software and controls in any language other than English (another reason not to use them ... but that's a long story). How they require localizable strings is a pain at best, and we are looking at an approach that will be a little more automated. A side effect is that we will have all the string resources localizable. One argument against this is that the extra effort for third parties who ship our systems in a different language is more significant. We try to weigh the pros and cons of any approach. (Another approach is to manually determine which strings need to be localized and manually generate the code that allows it).

Hello,

Eric.

The balloon will be .10 ~ .20 USD per word.

You need to be careful when translating resx files, especially if translatable and non-translatable content moves together. There are tools like Alchemy Catalyst and Lingobit Localizer that can help you and your translators better manage these resources.

For example, in Catalyst, a developer can go through each resx file and block specific lines to protect them from the translator.

As for pricing: http://www.proz.com is a great forum for translators. This is probably the best place to start.
