Download and install Ning on other servers
Can I download and install Ning on my own server? Also someone has a license.
I believe you cannot install Ning locally or on a test server. If so, does anyone know of a good open source social networking platform?

Ning is a hosted application, you cannot download it. I would try Elgg : www.elgg.org - it's open source and quite mature at this point.
There are also various modules / plugins for different CMS (Drupal, Plone, Joomla, WordPress, etc.) that you can use to add socnet functionality to your site.
Telerik's Sitefinity has a social networking starter pack if you're into ASP.NET programming.
which is not difficult. if you pay a monthly fee to get rid of your google ads you can redirect your ning to whatever url you want (it will still be hosted on their servers though)
