Need a simple, good (fairly priced) ER tool

I have been using ERWin for about 10 years now. My version is ancient and I don't think it's worth paying the ridiculous upgrade price!

The problem is it starts to show its age - I used its primarliy for MS SQL.

I would like to justify Embarcadero ER / Studio, but I just need something that will allow me to create a database and keep it in sync.

I have checked https://stackoverflow.com/questions/674911/light-weight-er-diagram-tool but nothing comes up except Schemabank. But the web tool has too many disadvantages (recurring fees, less integrated data outside of the storage location).

I also used SQL Maestro for regular queries and database management. This was fine, but it has a few distinct disadvantages. Has anyone used ER constructor successfully?

What are you guys using?

We are just using Visual Studio Database Edition (which is now included in Team Developer Developer Edition).

Ability to create diagrams in SQL Server, as well as link ER diagrams in Visio.

We are currently using ORM tools, so documentation diagrams are ORM diagrams in some cases.

In short, 10 years ago we used and could protect the added value of a targeted ER tool. Now we just use what's built into the other tools we use.

Try Netbeans, it's free and open source. http://www.netbeans.org/

ER Diagram and SQL Database Instructions http://wiki.netbeans.org/ERDRequirementsV2

And instructions for connecting to MSSQL http://wiki.netbeans.org/AccessMssql

I really like Quest Toad Data Modeler - it seems quite capable so far, but it's a fraction of the cost of what other "Professional Grade" ER Tools usually cost.

Check it! I would say it is worth looking good.

You can also try DB Designer - Freebie for MySQL.
