What software and hardware is needed to develop an iPod? On a PC?

I have an idea for a simple iPod application. I am an experienced programmer, but I have no experience with iPod or Mac or Apple operating system. What are the basic hardware and software requirements for development using a PC as a development platform? Does the PC have to run Linux?

You cannot run applications on an iPod unless it's an iPhone or iPod Touch. For this platform, you need a Mac with Leopard, Xcode (free) and an SDK (free).

You can learn the term Hackintosh - then you can start Xcode. Didn't do it myself and you may need to buy certain hardware :)

You need to use Macintosh and Xcode to develop software for iPhone / iPod touch.

A new software called ModelBaker was announced this week that lets you create iPhone Ajax applications, but it only works on the Macintosh.
