Simplemembership "remember me"

I am getting the following exception, intermittently, when accessing the [Authorize] 'd action. It seems to work for a while and then fails at other times, but its definitely worse when I log in and select the remember me button. If I log out and then log back in immediately, there is no error, so the text below cannot be exactly accurate ... there is something ELSE going on here, but I am unable to identify it.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:
    A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while
    establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not
    found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name
    is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote
    connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 -
    Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Edit 1

This is where the InitializeDatabaseConnection is requested: WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection("UserDB", "tblPortalUsers", "ID", "UserName", autoCreateTables: false);

Edit 2

I noticed something strange in the middle of this stacktrace:

   at System.Web.Management.SqlServices.Install(String database, String dbFileName, String connectionString)
   at System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHelper.CreateMdfFile(String fullFileName, String dataDir, String connectionString)
   at System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHelper.CreateMdfFile(String fullFileName, String dataDir, String connectionString)
   at System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHelper.EnsureSqlExpressDBFile(String connectionString)
   at System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHelper.GetConnection(String connectionString, Boolean revertImpersonation)
   at System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser(String username)
   at WebMatrix.WebData.SimpleRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser(String username)
   at System.Web.Security.RolePrincipal.IsInRole(String role)

Why is this code trying to create an MDF file? My data is stored in SQL server with the connection string name UserDB defined in web.config as:

<connectionStrings>
    <add name="UserDB" connectionString="data source=NORWAY\DEV;initial catalog=SOMEDB;persist security info=True;user id=MYUSER;password=MYPASS" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
    <add name="DALEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/DAL.DAL.csdl|res://*/DAL.DAL.ssdl|res://*/DAL.DAL.msl;provider=System.Data.SqlClient;provider connection string="data source=NORWAY\DEV;initial catalog=SOMEDB;persist security info=True;user id=MYUSER;password=MYPASS;multipleactiveresultsets=True;App=EntityFramework"" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" />
</connectionStrings>

What could cause it to deviate from the specified DB and try to deploy a new MDF to store the membership data? Why does this ONLY happen when the user uses their "remember me" to log in? (I think so, anyway ... until I could prove it)

Looking at the stack trace it seems like it has SimpleRoleProvider

n't been initialized:

at System.Web.Security.SqlRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser(String username)
at WebMatrix.WebData.SimpleRoleProvider.GetRolesForUser(String username)

Based on the code, the only way to get this stack trace is with a property InitializeCalled

false

:

public override string[] GetRolesForUser(string username)
{
   if (!InitializeCalled)
   {
       return PreviousProvider.GetRolesForUser(username);
   }
   ...

This internal property is set using a InitializeRoleProvider

classWebSecurity

method that is called from the method InitializedDatabaseConnection

.

Are you absolutely sure that your call WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection

is being made every time the application is launched?

I think your problem is with InitializeSimpleMembership because all your pages require a login.

try it

IsUserInRole error with SimpleMembership

Remember to change your settings as follows

WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection("UserDB", "tblPortalUsers", "ID", "UserName", autoCreateTables: true);

Since you are changing your column name in your database "UserProfile" to "tblPortalUsers"
