How is the international SMS long number?

The organization I work for wants to be able to send SMS all over the world and there seem to be many providers for that. However, we also want users to be able to select globally, which is more complicated.

I understand that long codes are international and at first I thought that we could just get one long code and be able to receive disclaimers all over the world. However, after talking to someone at Clickatell, I found that they sell long codes in ranges that cover different networks in different countries. This would mean that we would have to have several long codes that are messy and out of our budget.

So, I thought I sorted it out until I read this paragraph on the mNatives website ( http://www.mnatives.com/short-long-code.aspx ):

SMS Long code, also known as virtual number, is a regular mobile number used exclusively for receiving messages from mobile devices. Messages can be sent from any international mobile networks and received over the network using our web interface or can be downloaded in real time using SMPP. Unlike short SMS short codes, which are local geographic area within the operator's area / codes or virtual numbers that can receive messages from devices across the world... They are often used to create a bi-directional communication channel between an SMS application or user and a mobile phone audience that allows information on demand SMS services that provide Unicode text or binary messages.

It probably sounds like one number can work all over the place - is that what they say?

I study high and low, struggling to figure it all out, no luck. Can anyone give me some idea of how long numbers work? Is the long digit available depending on who you buy it with? Is it even possible one global long number?

I would appreciate your guidance. :) Thanks!

Disclaimer: I am doing a developer evangelism for Nexmo.

Long numbers (essentially virtual numbers) vary depending on their coverage. Check out this FAQ from Nexmo (SMS API) about Nexmo Number Reachability: Inbound Reach List (I have abbreviated the list to these numbers with International Reach):

Country International Reach
Australia Yes - see list
Austria Yes - see list
Ireland Yes - see list
Lithuania Probably
Netherlands Probably
Norway Probably
Sweden Yes - see list
Switzerland Probably
UK (+ 447xx) Yes - see list

Each "watchlist" will lead to a specific list of carriers / networks that can reach the virtual number.

For the greatest international coverage, you may need to purchase several different numbers; however, keep in mind that the cost your users pay to send an SMS to a number may also differ. Thus, you can consider more than just the reachability of the number.

As for the cost, it depends on the virtual number. Room prices from Nexmo range from under $ 6 per month (with incoming Nexmo SMS for free).
