How does Apple website automatically play videos if autoplay is disabled in iOS?

As I keep reading, there is no way to enable HTML5 video autoplay in iOS browsers.

So why does my old iPad (with iOS 8) automatically start this introductory video like http://www.apple.com/ipad-air-2/ ?

When checking this on desktop chrome, I pause at some point and see the script inserting the element <video>

with the mp4 file and then removing it after the animation finishes. I also looked into their script file but didn't find a definite answer to this question.

I want to clarify that I am not initiating any action other than opening the URL. I purposefully avoided every contact (no tap, touch, etc.).

Can anyone with more video ads explain this?

This question has been answered for me elsewhere, so in case anyone stumbles upon this later ...

Short answer: Apple doesn't show videos on a device like iPad. They flash with a burst of JPEG images such as a film strip, making it look like it is playing a video. For a desktop browser, they will show the video file.
