Can't create image field in Django app.

I am working on a Django application whose main functionality is based on storing photo albums. I am using Django 1.8.1 with Python 3.

Here are the models I've created so far:

I am now using Factory Boy to create objects in my test. When I try to create an object Photo

UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 0: invalid start byte

      

The same thing happens if I try to define the image manually. As far as I can tell, the path to the image is correct. Also, I used something like this for a Django 1.7 project running on Python 2.7 with no problem, so it might be something Python 3 specific.

Can anyone see where I went wrong here? I can create new photo objects using the Django admin interface, so I don't think the issue is with the model, just how I interact with it in tests.
