"Unable to fire event" when opening calendar events (* .ics) on android phones

I get an "Unable to fire event" error if I try to open an * .ics event file on Android. It only works when opened directly from gmail. Any other attempts to open it outside of gmail give the above error. I am trying to send calendar events over text messages. It works for iphones, but I am getting this error on android phones.
