Getting Started with Websphere Portal 6.1

Okay, my company is a bank. Top management is installed on the IBM web server. Apparently, IBM is throwing them a dice they can't refuse. We are also a very large IBM store anyway with lots of LotusNotes applications.

In my experience with IBM, they usually force you to walk through them to study their material. I need to jump into the head first so that I can give an overview of the product to the development team. I am specifically trying to find free resources for portal development. Heh-hey world portal will be fine. Also, when I say portal, it also includes portlets.

Another problem is that I am best at doing this. Can anyone point me to a freetrial link or something for the websphere portal? Actually, I just need something that will allow me to get my feet wet with the kind of coding I would need to do for a real portal.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions are welcome in any way / form / form.

Check out the IBM Redbooks and online help for documentation and development guides. Try a trial version of Rational Application Developer for portlet development - this comes with a test WPS server.

If I remember from the time I worked with it, RAD has some hello world examples for WPS. You can also import sample portlets here .

For me, these two are very good CMS solutions:

  • Liferay
  • Alfresco

Liferay is a Java-based open source portal. He made decisions. Alfresco is only a CMS solution, but it has social apps and many nice content management features.

To be honest, I've tested both Liferay and WebSphere Portal (I'm a certified administrator). Liferay seems more appealing at first, but it lacks a few features (at least the versions I've used) that will slow you down in the middle of a deployment. It won't have many portlets to start with (you'll need to develop them)

Plus, if you're planning on building a site that relies heavily on customization and personalization, Liferay doesn't have that kind of support.

WepSphere portal also has much better SSO (Single Sign On) support and security is better (since you are a bank)

Hope this helps.
