How to change overflow button icon color to ActionBar

trying to change the color of three dots for android overflow button. I looked online for a solution and didn't seem to find a clear answer. I looked at this stackOverflow post: Change Overflow Button Color to ActionBar and the solution didn't work. I haven't really seen the logic go, although copying and pasting the solution into my code doesn't seem like the surest path of fire. If anyone has any advice or wants to explain a solution from a previous post on the same question, that would be awesome. Thank!
