Android for Zigbee communication

I'm a college student doing a project to connect an android app to a light switch, I'm wondering if using Zigbee messaging is appropriate.

Can you connect to hardware using Arduino + board and then send messages to Android device, or even install Android on Arduino and work from there?

There are not many (if any) Android devices with a string in zigbee. You will need an adapter like this: http://ligi-tec.blogspot.de/2009/02/dubwise-range-extender.html But maybe take a step back and think about why you want to use zigbee for your use case. Do you need a range? You need mesh capabilities (if that's the reason you might need more than the aforementioned adapter). IMHO you have to stick to wifi or blutooth to switch headlights
