There's a pretty good deal of this already existing on the stats stackexchange, which I posted as a link, as much of this answer will be similar, but perhaps less extensive.

In short, your value R^2

compares your regression to a horizontal line. If the value is R^2

less than horizontal, you will see a negative value.
